In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a new era” and an bold start to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for worry of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Core Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing basic services: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
