The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.
"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.
Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Backup Options
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
