Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
