It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will take a three-month break until April, when the next major arc begins.
New Release Strategy
From now on, the series will release two seasons every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the universe — including more material, tempo, and timing of the source material.” However, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.
Learning from Past Breaks
The series anime had a half-year pause that started in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to deliver fans with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.
Adopting Modern Trends
While some recap episodes appeared during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the anime covering one chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or additional to make up for time.
This concludes of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of production, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have so many side stories, and the quality of the art can vary widely between installments and the following. Today, anime production is organized in cours, with a couple at most releasing each year, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
