France to begin intercepting migrant vessels in English Channel following UK pressure
French officials have consented to begin stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, following months of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the British leader sent a letter to the President asking him to support the plan and saying there currently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both personnel and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police representative says personnel will start intervening at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a potential technique to disable the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a major step forward, following a brief shift towards a more aggressive approach this summer, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister departed from government.
That was highlighted in July, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to slash the hulls of a boat.
Currently French authorities will once more be permitted to intercept boats prior to they pick up migrant passengers from the beaches of northern France, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for methods to adapt to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been approached for comment.
